Every wedding starts with a vision: a color you love, a feeling you want to create, a handful of saved pins that just feel right. But how do you take that broad inspiration and turn it into a solid, consistent theme?
In this post, we’re walking through the basic outline of how to transform a general vision into a unified design. Whether you're planning to use book page flowers or fresh florals, this approach will help you narrow in on what matters and build a theme that feels thoughtful, creative, and completely you.
Stay tuned for upcoming chapters, where we’ll explore floral design, color palettes, and customization in greater depth.
Step 1: Start with the Feeling, Not the Flowers

Before diving into types of blooms or bouquet shapes, ask yourself:
What feeling do I want my wedding to have?
Do I imagine it being romantic and soft, bold and modern, natural and earthy, or whimsical and fun?
What season are we getting married in, and do I want that to show up in the flowers?
Your overall vibe should guide your floral decisions. If your vision is cozy fall romance, you might lean toward warm tones and loose, wildflower arrangements. If you’re dreaming of something modern and minimal, sleek-lined flowers and monochromatic palettes could be your starting point. Maybe you love the pastels of spring or want your day to feel whimsical or nostalgic.
Whatever your vision, you want it to be deeply personal.
At Anthology on Main, we help you bring your vision to life, even when it starts as just a feeling. Sharing your Pinterest board and inspiration photos allows us to see themes and patterns you may have missed, uncovering what truly speaks to you and crafting a floral design that beautifully reflects your unique style.
Step 2: Choose Floral Shapes That Fit the Mood

Once you've establish the feel of your vision, it’s time to start thinking about what shapes and textures of flowers will help bring that vision to life. You don’t need to know specific varieties right now, your florist can help with that, but having a sense of the look and feel you’re drawn to makes the process so much easier.
Do you like full, lush blooms or more airy, delicate stems? Do you prefer traditional flowers or ones that feel unexpected? Having an idea of the overall vibe you want your flowers to give off will guide your florist in building a mix that reflects your style.
Note: We’ll explore floral styles and how to choose the right one for your wedding in Chapter 2, coming October 7th, 2025.
Step 3: Define Your Color Palette

Color is one of the most important steps in creating a floral theme that truly feels pulled together. To give you a general guide, you’ll want to start by picking 2–3 main colors and 1–2 accent shades. These will help set the vibe and atmosphere for your entire day.
Note: If you're unsure of color options, be sure to return for Chapter 3 of this series, where we’ll take an in-depth look at curating the perfect color palette, coming October 14th, 2025.
As you begin to explore color options, keep in mind that other aspects of your wedding will naturally influence your palette:
Your attire: What colors complement your dress, suit, or wedding party attire?
Your venue: Are there existing tones in the space that you want to echo or contrast?
The overall mood: Are you going for bold and vibrant, soft and romantic, earthy and natural, or something dark and moody?
Your theme: If your wedding vision draws from a book, fandom, or specific story, consider the colors that reflect that world or aesthetic.
Your color palette will act as a visual anchor for your entire wedding design. With so many beautiful options out there, having a clear direction will help your choices feel focused, intentional, and truly reflective of your unique style.
Step 4: Build a Foundation, Then Add Details

By this stage, your floral theme has a clear foundation; your vision, a sense of your floral preferences, and color palette are starting to come together.
The key now is to create a baseline of consistency that runs through every floral element, giving your wedding a cohesive and intentional feel. This could be repeating certain flower varieties, colors, or textures that tie everything together, from the bridal bouquet to the ceremony and reception pieces.
But consistency doesn’t mean everything has to be predictable. In fact, we love to infuse your floral story with unexpected details: a unique bloom here, a golden snitch there, or hidden surprises waiting to be discovered by your guests.
Whether you're dreaming of a timeless palette or a whimsical, book-inspired twist, it's all about creating balance between consistency and surprise. And that’s where the magic really happens!
There's a lot more to come in this series! Keep following along for more imaginative ideas that will make your wedding day memorable, meaningful and one-of-a-kind.
